Imagine being a young child who had enough energy to fuel a jet plane with enough energy left over to play basketball, softball, football and kickball all in one day. Imagine a young child running through the fields and dirt roads of Taylors Island, Maryland and beating out all the other kids with sheer speed and agility. Imagine that same child having to cope with asthma…constantly having the feeling of trying to catch your breath. Now imagine that same child having the burning desire deep within to overcome this physical obstacle and trying to be the best that she can be in everything that she does. Imagine Angel McNamara….a woman bound and determined to overcome any obstacles that get in her way of becoming one of the most promising professional female boxers.

After graduating from Cambridge South Dorchester High School in 1991, Angel attended Morgan State University with a partial basketball scholarship. But this was not enough for Angel; in 1993 MSU started a softball team, in which she received a full scholarship. In an ongoing quest to succeed in athletics, Angel ranked in the top 20 for three different NCAA softball categories during the ’94 season. Leading the nation in stolen bases was only an appetizer for Angel. She wanted more out of athletics and longed to be challenged in sports. In 1999 she began attending the Baltimore Boxing Club.

After only three months of training and showing great promise and skill for a novice, she accepted her first fight, a light-welterweight match. Amazingly, she won by KO in the third round. Angel’s desire and discipline led her to a 4-1 record by the end of 1999. Unfortunately at the same time, she was forced to take an unexpected break from the sport. Of course Angel could not stay away long, her drive to overcome any obstacle in her way sent her back to the gym and the ring with an improved record of 8-2. She won a Regional Golden Gloves tournament and moved on to the National Golden Gloves Tournament in July of 2001. This time she walked away with the bronze.

Yet more obstacles were thrown her way, out of frustration of fighting the same girl five times due to a lack of competition. This caused her to take another hiatus with a record of 12-4. But Angel was determined to make the boxing profession work for her. She returned to fight one more amateur fight that improved her light-welterweight/welterweight record to 13-4.

Angel is currently fighting in the lightweight division in hopes of working her way back to the welterweight division while grabbing titles every step of the way. Angel has improved her technique tremendously and is now looking to make a professional debut. Angel was born on July 6, 1973 and is a resident of Silver Spring, Maryland.
